Put the ol' "SHOWDOWN" TFC server back into the lineup. Now you have a place to go again when someone in TFC insults your manhood!! As always, it's Steam-free. Have fun!

A expected, another chapter in the Half Life 2 tragedy! Taken directly (html code and all) from Planet Half-Life:

"Anonymous Leaker" Speaks
10/8/2003 10:09 PST | Half-Life 2 | by
Fragmaster
I'm not sure if it's really a great idea to post this, but "Anonymous Leaker" -- the guy who is apparently responsible for releasing the slightly playable pre-Alphaish version of HL2 which is unfortunately in circulation -- has released a statement of sorts. Here's a snip:
To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to understand it wasnt finished yet.

Also I'd like to point out the E3 [demo] was one big fake by Valve. Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the door will still get kicked ? No scripted sequences ?

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no such thing as a much better release in Valves network!

To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do.

Yikes. WARNING, BRIEF EDITORIALIZING AHEAD!

I'm not going to sit here and say I completely agree with Valve's policies, because I've criticized them in the past regarding how they handled the original release date delay announcement, among other things. And judging by what this guy says about the status of the game and professional game developer's analysis of what has leaked so far, it does seem pretty clear that the game isn't really that close to being done and hasn't even reached solid Beta status.

If this assessment is true, that would contradict a whole bunch of things Valve has said in the past, and make their behavior regarding the whole 9/30 release date drama even more questionable. But even so, that doesn't give "Anonymous Leaker" the right to help distribute stolen property. Leaking pre-release content like this hurts the fans, it hurts Valve, and it only serves to cause further delays in Half-Life 2's development.

Again, we encourage you to steer clear of all this junky leaked content. Don't support the actions of retarded, lonely, socially inept children who want to be big shots on IRC.

Thanks to REDDRUMZ for the news! Oh yeah, and be sure to vote in their poll!

-JP

P.S. I seriously doubt that I'm gonna run a HL2 server now... As a HLDS operator, I've watched for years as Valve gave us the cold shoulder in times of need (hlds exploits, cheats, de-prioritizing their non-cash cow mods, denying support to groups that try to make a difference like punkbuster, etc, etc, etc.) and this is just the straw the breaks the camel's back. Man... This story is very very easy to believe after dealing with them and their broken promises for this long. Long live id Software!

October 07, 2003 - 04:15pm PST

Another update on the never ending disaster that is HL2:

Forget the April release date!

Out of respect for the developers, (NOT Gabe) please don't give out links to any builds if you come across em. You can debate the political, economic, and moral whatever implications of this, but no linky. Lemme rephrase that - DO NOT tell people where to get it. It's not cool and you WILL get the wrath of the mods.

Thanks,

-JP

P.S. This is why Valve's stolen DRM bloatware is dangerous.
P.P.S. You're not supposed to look at the other pictures on the site. So don't.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THOTH!!!

(Sorry dudes... only Thoth gets the front page star treatment!!)

October 03, 2003 - 06:04am PST

I was digging around last night for additional information regarding yesterday's big scoop and its impact on HL2 when I found this trainwreck of a story:

Steam spoofing! Fun!
The fiasco continues

...After reading those links, check this out. It gets a lot better, trust me. Mental note: NEVER install Steam. You know that wonderful piece of bloatware just got a whole lot more secure *cough* now that the Steam auth/source code was included in the source theft. Remember kiddies - steam is designed to download "content" to your system. Yay!

Oh, and on an intersting note, it's been reported many times that the "Source" engine was built from scratch. Hm. Funny.. There sure is a lot of Q1 code all up in this thing... Sigh~

-JP

Additional thoughts: Man, Valve seems to be in serious disarray. I'm genuinely starting to feel sorry for em... Well, its devs, not really Gabe (You can thank him for steam's existance).

October 02, 2003 - 10:47pm PST

Ripped straight from the headlines of Slashdot and the Shack:

Half-Life 2 Source Leak

Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve. Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code. Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks. What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great. We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

Gabe

Sigh~ I've seriously done enough Valve bashing for one week... just come to your own conclusions.

Juicy Half Life 2 news! Straight from the Shack (Valve's response to delay rumors):

The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific "in-store" date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date.

Hmm... Maybe because Steam is still hopelessly BROKEN? Anyways, Max Payne 2 is still scheduled to hit its release date of October 15th!

Haven't updated for a while... here's what's new:

  • The NS JR is running 2.01e
  • The NS JR has a idle-kick plugin and a team balancing plugin.. both are still being tweaked.
  • Valve's EVIL EVIL EVIL Steam content delivery/DRM system is going to be mandatory very soon. And like my comm style in NS, I'm going to hold out for as long as possible!
  • Half Life 2, Max Payne 2, and Doom 3 (and maybe DNF) are all around the corner! The next few months are gonna be 8)
  • Good luck in the op room, Iron!

Here's the list of changes in the current NS 2.01d beta (Straight from the source):

This is still a work in progress, but I thought I'd post it here to see what you guys think. This list includes all the changes that are being kept from the previous 2.01 betas. Also note that this includes only the balance changes, not exploits, bugs or new features.

    2.01d
    -------
O Electricity cost reduced from 30 to 20
O Electricity research time reduced from 60 to 30
O Electricity range increased from 90 to 110 (to prevent exploiting)
O Offense chamber health reduced from 1150 to 1000
O Onos can no longer redeem while digesting a player
O Added "parasite switch fun" back
O Lowered marine upgrade costs from 30/40/50 to 20/30/40
O Reduce healing spray from 16 to 13
O Increase grenade damage from 110 to 125
O Fixed problem where specs can be heard talking before game start in tourny mode (untested)
O Fixed problem where dead players can sometimes be heard (untested)
O Fixed CURL timeout problems (untested)
O Hide opposing team score in tournament mode so you can't see how many resources towers they have (untested)
O New collision code to prevent players from getting stuck in structures (thanks Max!)
O Fixed problem where hera holoroom double node didn't build properly
O Fixed bug where being webbed and then devoured pulls out your weapon while inside the Onos
O Umbra blocks 2 out of 3 bullets (down from 3 out of 4 in 2.0)
O Increased bilebomb force from 600 to 800
O HMG does piercing damage (still needs something else here)
O Movement chambers can only be +used to teleport to an active (not building) hive
    O Increased hive cost from 35 to 50 (maybe 45, can't decide)
O Reduced command station cost from 25 to 20
O Reduced command station build time from 20 to 15
O Each level of celerity now increases speed by 25, down from 35 (it's now back to the 1.04 level)
O Fixed blinking marine HUD artifact when switching weapons with lag
O Leap reduced in speed by 20%
O Shotgun clip and reserve reduced from 10/50 to 8/40
O Lowered volume of cloaking and uncloaking sounds via cloaking upgrade (they are only a third as loud as they used to be. Might also remove the sounds entirely.)
O Sentries and offense chambers now do "light" damage. Light damage does half damage to HAs and Oni.

...Sounds good to me! HURRY UP WITH IT ALREADY!! (Sorry, the constant marine losses are getting to me... patience, Jigglypuff, patience...)

Thanks to Kurt for this bit of news! (Taken straight from the NS site):

    :: NS 2.0 server released!

"The NS 2.0 dedicated server has been released! This won't let you play NS, but it will let you host a dedicated server. Both Windows and Linux are supported. Go to the NS downloads page for mirrors, or try our sister site Readyroom.org for other links. More mirrors are being added constantly, so try back shortly if you're unable to get through.

Releasing the dedicated server early will make sure there are plenty of servers for everyone to play on tomrrow night, when NS 2.0 is released. Many thanks to all the server operators who spend their time and money to provide a free place for the whole community to play."

You're quite welcome! Thanks for making such a cool mod! Anyways, working on the NS 2.0 server right now... It should be up by the time the client binaries hit the mirrors. Oh yeah, and I'll also try to have a copy of the client up here because as we all well know, fileplanet sucks. ftp.cdrom.com forever! Not really.

Went with a small group to myevilplan's (belated) birthday gathering at Medieval Times this past weekend. Here's a few shots from the event:

    The fog rolls in
The king telling the general to STFU
    Go black and white knight!
B&W knight greeting his rabid loyal minions
It's good to be the king

...Couldn't take too many because our he-wench spilled soda on my camera so it was MIA 15 minutes into the show. Dried it off and couldn't turn it on til the next day. Bastard. Anyways, it was a pretty cool show til the very end - When the red knight defeated the traitor, the king proclaimed, "Raise the glorious flag of the new kingdom!" ...and instead of raising a flag with the typical griffin/dragon/castle emblem, they had him gallop around the arena with an American flag! YAY! The AMERICA KNIGHT WON! WOO! I mean, geez... that's almost as bad as when I went to Paris in Vegas and saw the American flag on every lamppost, pole, and wall in the casino. Not a single French flag was to be found, not even on the Eiffel Tower. Go America knight! Go freedom fries! YAAAY!

    End of an era...
Shut down the 12 and 32 player Jigglyrooms seeing as how they've been dead for a while now. If the NS team can get the CPU usage of the NS servers down considerably in 1.1, I'll probably start up a BF1942 JR :) How does that sound? Stick a fork in TFC, it's 3 years old!

It's been a while since I promised this, but here's a video tour of the old facility where the Jigglyroom was located (For those that couldn't attend the guided tour). It's not the most exciting stuff but gives you an idea as to what kind of place the box gets hosted in. The facility's been decomissioned for a while now so I'm guessing my NDA has expired. So without further delay, the Jigglyroom's old home!:
